21 June is our mid-winter solstice- and, of course, mid-summer solstice for our friends and relations in the northern hemisphere. We wish you all well for the coming year; and from Aotearoa we wish you Happy Matariki as well, as we celebrate the rising of the Seven Sisters star cluster in the north-eastern sky just before dawn.
A special time for Maori in pre-colonisation days, after harvest, for talk and celebration around the fires for the winter season. Now it is a special time for all of us in Aotearoa, with a wide range of activities and celebrations – somewhat more subdued this year because the threat of Covid-19, and world-wide loss and grief, hangs over us all.
