A lovely water’s edge house filled with colourful art works in flax, mosaic and paint, looking across an inlet to Pahi, on the north-eastern Kaipara Harbour…a very restful place to take a break.
We read books on the fascinating local history – including Dick Scott’s Seven Lives on Salt River, about early Maori occupation and warfare, a range of eccentric European settlers, fish factories, wheat mills, vineyards, peacock farms, forestry- none of which has flourished.
We enjoyed swimming and walking, a friendly dinner at the Maungaturoto RSA, plus exploring Paparoa, and Tanoa with its historic marae, Otamatea.
Fascinating to get a glimpse of life in this isolated corner of the Kaipara Harbour – lots more to explore.
