It’s wonderful being Westies, with the Waitakere Ranges on our doorstep and its beaches half an hour’s drive away.
We’ve just had a three day break at North Piha, in a comfortable old-fashioned holiday home, Tai Haruru, run by the Forest and Bird Society. We were totally surrounded by flowering pohutukawa, with tui hurtling through branches, kereru swooping around the house, birdsong and the sound of the wild winds and surf .
Beyond the huge breakers, a flock of surfies hovered, waiting to catch the perfect wave in to the shore. We were content with a bracing splash safely in the shallows.
From a walk on The Mercer Bay Loop Track we had stunning views of the rugged coast. This is one of 145 tracks available in the 16,000 ha Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which is a such a treasure of the Auckland Region.
